SPLAT! Musical Picking the Pieces
– Help Give A Second Chance At Life

15 Aug 2009     The SPLAT! Musical Picking the Pieces performances at The Arts House and Woodlands Regional Library came to a fulfilling end, leaving our guests with fresh perspectives on youths-at-risk and ex-youth offenders. Indeed, it is only with sustained support and understanding from the public, especially the family members and friends of these youths, that they come to realise and develop their better sides.

There were three performances of Picking the Pieces, two helmed by Anderson Secondary School and the other featuring volunteers from the Ministry Of Community Development, Youth and Sports, Boon Lay Secondary School, Jurongville Secondary School and community arts group Arteen Furteens. The organizing committee and production team consist of youth volunteers from diverse backgrounds, including ex-youth offenders and young people keen to educate their peers about the issues faced by youths-at-risk.

Associate Professor Ho Peng Kee, Senior Minister of State for Law and Home Affairs, and Chairman of the National Committee on Youth Guidance and Rehabilitation was our guest-of-honour at The Arts House while Dr Mohamad Maliki bin Osman, Parliamentary Secretary for National Development, and Deputy Chairman of the National Committee on Youth Guidance and Rehabilitation graced our musical at Woodlands Regional Library.

All our guests were invited to pen words of encouragement for ex-youth offenders on postcards featuring winning artworks from last year's Visual Art Competition, and these postcards formed the ever-growing HeARTbeat wall.

As part of the SPLAT! community arts movement, visual art pieces by the residents in Singapore Boys’ Home, Singapore Girls’ Home and participating secondary schools were showcased at all the musicals. Enthusiastic volunteers from Dunman High School led our guests through a detailed tour of the artwork and acted as a bridge between the artists and our guests by explaining the emotions that each artist had to struggle with before revealing their inner world through their work.
